Patara Ancient City: The Historical Capital of Lycia

  • Patara Ancient City is one of the most important settlements of Lycia with its deep-rooted history that sheds light on human history. Archaeological studies show that the foundation of the city dates back to the early Chalcolithic period, around 5500 BC.
  • In Hittite sources, the city, which was referred to as “Patar” in the 2nd millennium BC, was mentioned in connection with the Lukka expedition of Tuthaliya IV in the late 13th century BC. The information that Apollo performed his prophecies in Delos for six months of the year and in Patara for the other six months shows that the city was of great religious importance in the 1st millennium BC.
  • Patara, which was under the rule of the Persian Empire between 540-330 BC, was conquered by Alexander the Great in 334/333 BC. During the reign of the Ptolemaic Kingdom in Egypt, it was renamed Arsinoe between 287-197 BC and became an important port city. The city, which was briefly under the rule of the Seleucid dynasty, was ceded to Rhodos, an ally of the Romans, with the Treaty of Apameia in 188/187 BC.
  • Patara, the capital of the Lycian League, set an example in the ancient world with its democratic structure. In 43 AD, the city was proclaimed the capital of the Lycian province of the Roman Empire and retained this status after the union of Lycia and Pamphylia.
  • Patara is of great importance not only for its political history, but also for its cultural and religious context. The fact that St. Nicholas, one of the most important figures in the Christian world, was born in Patara in the 4th century AD, gives the city a spiritual significance.
  • Patara, which was an important naval base during the Byzantine period, joined the Seljuk lands in 1211 and passed under Ottoman rule in the early 15th century.
  • Patara sheds light on the cultural accumulation of not only the Lycian geography but also the entire Mediterranean world with its rich heritage from the past to the present.
