Patara is located east of the Eşen River, which marks the border between Antalya and Muğla provinces, within the borders of Gelemiş Village of Kaş district of Antalya.
The harbor bay, which connects the city to the Mediterranean Sea and has a length of about 2 kilometers, was formed as a result of the sea level rise due to the melting of glaciers in the Holocene Age. This geomorphological process was one of the main factors that shaped the settlement history and importance of Patara. The harbor bay, which has been a focal point for maritime trade throughout history with its natural and sheltered structure, also draws attention as one of the factors that led to the abandonment of the city.
In the last 500 years, as the alluvium carried by the Eşen River filled this natural harbor, Patara's connection with the sea was cut and the harbor lost its function. This process significantly changed the historical role of the city and its relationship with its surroundings.
