The Patara Lighthouse, probably destroyed in the 15th century, stood on a cliff at the southwestern end of Patara Harbor. The remains of the structure were uncovered in 2004-2005 after detailed excavations under a massive sand dune. Over 2500 blocks of local limestone were excavated and sorted in the immediate vicinity.
Analysis and digital reconstruction studies supported by 3D scanning have shown that most of the structural elements have survived to the present day and, although damaged, can be reassembled. With these characteristics, the Patara lighthouse is considered one of the rare examples of a lighthouse from antiquity that has survived almost intact.
The structure was planned and built in a single campaign; therefore, it is assumed that the lighthouse did not undergo any significant architectural changes during its lifetime. The lantern stands on a two-step podium and consists of a cylindrical tower. The tower consists of two intertwined cylindrical structures with a spiral loop staircase between them. This staircase starts from the door in the north, where the entrance to the tower is, and extends to the top. The domed upper room with arched windows is interpreted as the area where the fire, the light source of the lantern, was lit.
During the excavations, a monumental inscription written in gilded bronze letters on the upper level of the lighthouse tower and a second inscription on the base of a statue on the eastern facade were unearthed. These inscriptions document that the Patara lighthouse was built by Emperor Nero in 64/65 AD for the safety of sailors and sea travelers.
Ceramics and coins found during the excavations indicate that the lighthouse was in use from the 1st century AD to the 15th century AD. The restoration of the lighthouse of Patara, which is also marked on the maps of Piri Reis, continues with great care.
